Univar buys and sells

Univar Canada and Dow Chemical Canada have finalised the sale of the latter firm's caustic soda business in western Canada. Initially announced this past August, the acquisition will greatly enhance Univar Canada's footprint in terms of the distribution of caustic soda in western Canada and the Pacific north-west US and is projected to increase the company's sales of liquid caustic soda by up to 280,000 dry tonnes per annum. Furthermore, Univar as a whole now commands seven deep-sea and six barge terminals in North America, having added one deep-sea terminal as a result of this transaction.

At the same time, Univar's European arm has announced its exit from the AdBlue market with the sale of nearly all of its DurealĀ® AdBlue assets to Yara Nederland, a wholly owned subsidiary of Norway's Yara International. Under its Air1 brand Yara is arguably the largest producer and supplier of AdBlue in Europe. The sale of its Dureal business forms part of a larger strategic decision taken by Univar to focus on its core industrial chemical distribution business. No customer disruption is anticipated during the transition period.
