Guangzhou Shipyard has won an order for six innovative chemical parcel tankers from a group of Scandinavian shipowners. The 50,000 dwt ships, priced at some $40m each, were designed by Stena and are expected to be both economic and flexible in operation. Stena Bulk will take four of the six firm orders for the Stena Weco pool, with the other two going to Concordia Maritime; the contract includes options on four further ships.

“To challenge today's fierce competition within the tanker segment, we must invest in the higher end of the market,” said Ulf Ryder, president/CEO of Stena Bulk. “These ships will have an outstanding competitive edge both in the edible oil, chemical and clean tanker markets.”

”This is a logical step in the development of our business and fleet, to invest in vessels with very good fuel efficiency and with outstanding cargo flexibility," says Hans Norén, president of Concordia Maritime. "They will be operating in the segment where we have our main focus and where we believe there is a very good growth potential.”
