Northern Marine Management Ltd, the ship management division of Stena AB, is the first shipping company to be certified according to the new BS ISO 50001-2011 – Energy Management Systems standard, following an audit by Bureau Veritas. The standard aims to assist organisations in making better use of energy-consuming assets, reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and promote energy management best practices within organisations.

“Achieving this new and high standard for energy management across the whole company is a key step for us in demonstrating that shipping is at the forefront of environmental responsibility,” says Philip Fullerton, technical director of Northern Marine Management.

Northern Marine technically manages 57 vessels, including the Stena tanker and gas carrier fleet, as well as vessels for various other blue chip ship owners. As part of its energy management and conservation strategy, the company implemented its first Shipboard Energy Management Plans on board its Stena vessels during 2005. Last year an environmental and energy efficiency rating scheme was implemented on five of Stena’s ro-ro vessels, and two new environmental policies were rolled out across the company.

“This is an important step for Northern Marine and for shipping as a whole. It shows how shipping can be a leader in responsible energy use,” says Claude Maillot, ships in service director, Bureau Veritas, which conducted its environmental audit both ashore and at sea.
Only four other organisations in the UK have achieved the BS ISO 50001 certification.
