Emerald Performance Materials (EPM), a producer of speciality chemicals for a broad range of food and industrial applications, has signed up US-based ChemLogix to provide it with “both a transportation management solution and extensive chemicals expertise to optimise logistics operations” at its eight independently operated production facilities. “Emerald is a diversified manufacturer, with products shipped using all modes of transit across North America and overseas. We chose ChemLogix because of their flexible engagement model, their chemical industry expertise and their focus on cost reductions,” says EPM logistics manager Marty Lembach.

With more than half of its business moved in bulk shipments, EPM required a 3PL that could not only negotiate the most cost-effective carrier contracts, but also address a wide array of handling needs associated with its broad product portfolio, including regulated and non-regulated materials and food-grade products. Moreover, its goal to be a best-in-class vendor required world-class technology to support its logistics operations processes.

Combining chemicals logistics expertise with advanced optimisation technology available through the Sterling Transport Management System (TMS), ChemLogix, it asserts, is able to offer “a complete on-demand TMS solution” that will support EPMs’ logistics operations in several key areas, namely freight procurement, order management, carrier management, routing guide compliance, service performance visibility and freight audit and payment. “We intend to continuously drive value to Emerald through automating execution processes and creating shipment cost and service visibility with our solution,” states Ed Hildebrandt, ChemLogix senior vice-president, operations.

Bill Harvey has been named as ChemLogix’s new director of logistics engineering. Based at the company's Pennsylvania headquarters, he will provide engineering analytical support to the company’s domestic and international business operations. Harvey boasts significant chemical logistics experience, having most recently served as commercial director, logistics for Elemica, providing “logistics process connectivity solutions” to the chemical industry. He has also held logistics and technology positions with both chemical process and transport companies, including Arco/Lyondell Chemical and Stolt-Nielsen. “With his extensive background in developing chemical industry logistics solutions, Bill brings significant depth to the resources that ChemLogix applies to help our customers improve their freight management processes,” Hildebrandt says.
