Applus takes over MB

Applus RTD, one of the leading providers of non-destructive testing (NDT), inspection and integrity management services, has acquired MB Inspection Ltd, the UK's leading NDT/inspection firm, from Motherwell Bridge. No financial details were provided.

MB Inspection, headquartered in Falkirk, Scotland, has more than 25 years' experience in NDT and inspection and has annual turnover approaching £30m. Applus RTD, based in Holland but part of the Spanish Applus+ group, has been in the same business for 70 years and sees the acquisition as a way into the UK market.

"Applus RTD is a long-established company operating in a similar way around the world and is reinforcing its strategic presence in the UK," the company says. MB Inspection and Applus RTD are therefore extremely complementary. Applus RTD will make its technology and knowledge base available for the MBI operation in the UK."

Rob van Doorn, Applus RTD CEO, says, "Our company is already worldwide leader in NDT and inspection. To continue growing we needed to strengthen our presence in important areas like the UK. We are therefore very pleased to have MBI in our group. The acquisition fits perfectly in our ambitious growth plans."

The deal is seen as good news by Motherwell Bridge, whose chairman, Hugh Hayes, remarks, "The coming together of the two companies will also lead to the creation of a numer of new jobs and there are currently vacancies for NDT technicians at all levels at MB Inspection sites throughout the UK."

Applus RTD was known as Röntgen Technische Dienst until its takeover by Applus+ in April 2006. It now accounts for some 25 per cent of group turnover and is showing "strong growth", the group says.
