The number of pipeline leaks in Europe continues to decline, according to the latest annual set of data collated by the oil companies’ European association for environment, safety and health in refining and distribution, CONCAWE. Nine product spills were counted in 2007, corresponding to 0.26 spills per 1,000 km of pipeline, which is just under the five-year rolling average and well below the long-term average of 0.55. This figure has fallen from a high point of 1.2 in the mid-1970s.
